Defending champion Cristian Garin has proved to be a step too far for Jordan Thompson at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Garin, the No.5 seed, came from a set down to eliminate the Australian 3-6 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The win extended Garin’s winning streak in Houston to seven matches, and the Chilean will now meet No.2 seed Taylor Fritz for a place in the semi-finals.

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios was already into the quarters after upset seventh-seed Tommy Paul in straight sets on Wednesday and he’s set to play American Michael Mmoh.

John Isner joined them in the last eight when erased a match point and hit a tournament-record 38 aces during a 6-7 (7-1) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 comeback victory over fellow American Steve Johnson on Thursday.

Isner, who won the title in 2013, is one of five Americans in the quarter-finals, tying the most at the event since it moved to Houston in 2001. He’s joined by Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka and Mmoh.

Fritz, the highest-ranked American man at No.13 and seeded No. 2 in Houston, advanced Thursday by beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-1 6-4.

Fritz has won nine of his past 10 matches, including a title at Indian Wells, California last month.

Tiafoe advanced by beating Pablo Cuevas 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-4).
