Former world No.3 Juan Martin del Potro is poised to return to action for the first time since June 2019, as a wildcard at the Argentina Open starting next week.
De Potro is making a comeback after four right knee surgeries and more than two-and-a-half years on the sidelines.
He has accepted wildcards to play two clay-court tournaments in South America, the first in his homeland before he will feature at the Rio Open in Brazil the following week.
Del Potro, winner of the 2009 US Open among 22 singles titles, has had a career blighted by wrist and knee injuries.
His last tournament was at Queens Club in London, where he injured his knee in a first-round victory.
“It will be very special to come back to the tour in Buenos Aires and play in Rio, too,” del Potro said in a statement shared by Rio Open organisers.
“I have worked a lot and made all the effort to be with you in the next few weeks.”
Del Potro has not played in the Argentina Open, an ATP 250 event, since 2006 while he will make his maiden appearance in the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
A silver medallist in the singles at the 2016 Olympics, del Potro is ranked world No.757 as he embarks on his long-awaited return to the sport.
