GWS Giants midfielder Jacob Hopper has requested a trade to Richmond after the 2020 premiers launched a late bid to trump his likely move to Geelong.
The midfielder, who has one year left on his contract, looked set to seek a move to the Cats until Richmond – frontrunners to secure his Giants teammate Tim Taranto – entered the fray.
Hopper and Taranto could now swap orange and charcoal for yellow and black in the same summer on contracts worth a combined $1.5 million per year.
Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and veteran forward Jack Riewoldt have taken pay cuts to aid the moves, with the retirements of Shane Edwards and Kane Lambert also opening up their salary cap.

The Tigers are expected to cough up multiple first-round draft picks for Hopper, 25, and Taranto, 24.
Taranto is out of contract but not a free agent and must rely on a trade to get to Richmond on a reported seven-year deal.
