Australian women have enjoyed their best day at Wimbledon qualifying in almost 30 years with seven advancing to the second round.
Fifth seed Maddison Inglis romped home after a tough first set against Dutchwoman Indy De Vroome, banking a 7-6 (10-8) 6-1 victory on Tuesday at Roehampton, which is close to the Wimbledon complex.
West Australian Astra Sharma, seeded 10th, survived a tough contest with Switzerland’s Joanne Zuger 7-6 (8-6) 6-4, while Zoe Hives caused an upset by eliminating 20th-seeded Romanian Gabriela Lee 6-2 6-4.
Jaimee Fourlis saved two match points in a comeback victory against Bosnia’s Dea Herdzelas 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

Priscilla Hon, Lizette Cabrera and Storm Sanders also recorded first-round wins, capping the best day for an Australian contingent in 28 years.
There were four casualties in the 11-strong Aussie women’s field, with Olivia Gadecki, Ellen Perez, Seone Mendez and Kaylah McPhee all eliminated.
Players need to win three rounds to earn a coveted main draw spot in the grass-court grand slam .
