According to a report in Swedish outlet Sport Bladet, Arsenal and Chelsea Women have both met the release clause for Rosengard’s Serbian midfielder Jelena Cankovic.
The 26-year-old signed a new contract last year which means that she has a release clause. The reliable Swedish journalist Daniel Kristoffersson reports that Arsenal and Chelsea have both met the release clause.
In that scenario, Rosengard, current manager Jonas Eidevall’s former club, would be powerless to prevent Cankovic from leaving and the Serb would have a choice between the two London clubs.
Arsenal are looking to reinforce in midfield and were linked with Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir earlier in the summer. Chelsea are also looking to strengthen in midfield having lost Ji So Yun and Drew Spence this summer and with Melanie Leupolz on maternity leave.
Cankovic has already played under Jonas Eidevall which the Gunners hope will work to their advantage. Arsenal are also looking to add a wide player to replace Nikita Parris, who will join Manchester United after the Euros have finished, as well as a striker to compete with Stina Blackstenius with Vivianne Miedema now moving into the number 10 position.
Earlier this week, Arsenal made their first signing of the summer with American goalkeeper Kaylan Mackerse.
